Energy Alternatives for the 21st Century (EA-21) – http://www.ea-21.org – charges that President Obama's calls for action on energy policy have lacked a clear focus on effective steps to get us off of oil and that the President's speech Tuesday night seems to be more of the same. It's time for Presidential leadership — rather than just rhetoric — in order to pass the Open Fuel Standard bill, S 835, now being considered by Congress. — the only quick, cheap and effective way to significantly reduce our dependence on oil. U.S. taxes collected from the domestic petroleum industry represent a complex and often contradictory patchwork of policy initiatives, trading off concerns over raising revenues with attempts to encourage the development of clean fuels as well as reducing oil and gas imports. The largest drawback of the Administration's tax proposals is that they tend to push U.S. energy policy towards greater reliance on imported oil and natural gas and greater reliance on imported refined products. Texans for a Sound Energy Policy Alliance (TSEPA) today questioned the logic of the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority's (GBRA) decision to extend its water reservation agreement with Exelon while simultaneously requesting others to conserve. With the Guadalupe River Basin experiencing Stage 2 drought conditions, GBRA encouraged all users to limit their water usage. Additionally, GBRA was forced to increase the release rate from Canyon Lake into the Guadalupe River in order to meet the current water supply demands for its downstream user, the City of Victoria. At the same time, GBRA accepted $1.1 million from Exelon to reserve 75,000 acre-feet from the Guadalupe for its proposed nuclear power plant near Victoria. (PRWeb Jul 7, 2009)

Driven by skyrocketing crude prices, rising concerns over environmental pollution, and the consequent switch towards alternate fuels, the world ethanol market is projected to reach 27.7 billion gallons by the year 2012. Stringent legislation of emission standards, and governmental intervention by way of subsidies, and tax incentives are expected to foster market growth in the medium to long run. Both developed and developing markets are expected to lend traction to the market’s growth in the future. China and India, within Asia-Pacific, represent lucrative markets to mine.
